ABSTRACT

BackgroundPatients with autoimmune rheumatic disease (AIRD) are at risk of severe COVID-19 infection and vaccine has been demonstrated to be able to reduce the severity of infection. Malaysia has a low flu vaccination coverage rate (approximately 3%) and hence it is important to assess the perception and hesitancy of COVID-19 vaccine especially among the vulnerable group.ObjectivesTo study the perception of COVID-19 vaccine and to determine the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy among AIRD patients in Malaysia.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional survey using online Google Forms® that was conducted among adult AIRD patients (18 years and older) from August 2021 until February 2022. Patients were recruited from the outpatient clinics as well as distribution of the survey through social medias. The survey was in English and Malay language. The survey collected data on the socio-demographic background, prior history of other vaccination after the age of 18 and COVID-19 vaccination with reasons of hesitancy, defined as being unsure or unwilling to be vaccinated. The survey also assessed the patients' perception by specifying the level of agreement to COVID-19 vaccine statements using the Likert response scale: 1-Strongly disagree;2- Disagree;3-Neither agree nor disagree;4-Agree;5-Strongly agree.ResultsA total of 162 patients participated in the survey and majority of them were females (87.7%). Our multi-racial cohort consisted of Malay (n=103, 63.5%), followed by Chinese (n=38, 23.5%), Sabahan Bumiputra (n=12, 7.4%) and Indian (n=7, 4.3%). More than half (n=107,66.6%) have not had any history of other vaccination after the age of 18. Only 16.7% (n=27) agreed/strongly agreed that COVID-19 vaccine can be given to patients with co-morbidities and 24.1 (n=39) agreed/strongly agreed that COVID-19 vaccine can be given to patients who have history of allergy to other drugs or food. At the time of the survey, vast majority of the respondents have received at least the 1st dose of Covid-19 vaccine (n=148, 91.4%). A total of 9 (5.6%) patients were hesitant to be vaccinated (6 were unsure and 3 patients were not willing to be vaccinated). The commonest reasons of being unsure or not willing to be vaccinated was worried of the vaccine's adverse effects (66.7%), worried of the blood clot complication (33,3%), worried of disease flare post-vaccine (33,3%), worried of allergic reaction (22.2%), lack of information on the safety of the vaccine in patients with AIRD from government and media (22.2%), face mask and social distancing measures were adequate (22.2%). Statistical analysis revealed that more patients who had vaccine hesitancy were from the lower socioeconomic status (income <1066 Euro/month), 88.9% vs 11.1%, p=0.03 but no association with ethnicity, education status, marital status or place of residence (urban vs rural).ConclusionCOVID-19 vaccine hesitancy is low in Malaysian patients with AIRD but patients with a low socioeconomic status are prone to have vaccine hesitancy. ABSTRACT

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 causes a dreadful Coronavirus Disease namely COVID-19. Respiratory system is the primary target of the virus. It also impairs other major organs such as kidney, heart, liver, brain etc. Multiple novel variants of SARS-CoV-2 have appeared since the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic occurred which are linked to increased virulence, disease transmission and severity. The virus attacks the host signalling pathways to maintain a favourable environment for its spread. The present study focuses on the comprehensive analysis of major signaling pathways affected due to several variants of SARS-CoV-2 leading to abnormalities in cell growth and differentiation. The information was curated from the weblinks of several platforms like WHO, CDC, PANGO, Nextstrain clade and GISAID clade. The data on signaling pathways and comorbidities was generated by screening of different research and review articles. SARS-CoV-2 consolidates the cytoskeleton of the host for effective cell invasion and modulates the transcription processes to enable the translation of viral protein(s). These events lead to significant increase and prolonged hyper inflammation. Further, a decreased interferon (IFN) response along with increased interleukin production leading to cytokine storm is observed. Deregulation of interleukin pathways, TNF-alpha signalling through JAK/STAT-3 signalling, MAPK1, mTOR, PI3K are few other signalling pathways that are affected on SARS-CoV-2 infection. This review represents a comprehensive analysis of the vigorous life cycle of SARS CoV-2, its different variants affecting host signalling pathways which eventually cause dysfunctioning of several organs and development of comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundPatients with pre-existing rheumatic diseases may be exacerbated during SARS-CoV-2 infection, or may develop new autoimmune features. Furthermore, immunosuppressive agents used to treat autoimmunity-inflammation as well as comorbidities can also affect the disease outcome.ObjectivesTo evaluate the outcome of rheumatic diseases after Covid 19 infection in patients diagnosed with rheumatic diseases, under various immunosuppressive treatment, as well as the effects of vaccines against Covid or antiviral treatment in this sensitive population group.MethodsDuring the pandemic, 1493 patients with autoimmune or autoinflammatory disease who were continuously followed up in two tertiaries hospitals in northern and northwestern Greece were included in the current study. The patients were compared with 769 controls after adjustment for age, sex, weight, vaccination status and comorbidities. Of the 1493 patients, 648 had rheumatoid arthritis, 282 psoriatic arthritis, 173 ankylosing spondylitis, 122 systemic lupus erythematosus, 98 Sjogren's syndrome, 43 polymyalgia rheumatica, 34 mixed connective tissue disease or overlapping syndromes, 31 vasculitis, 27 systemic sclerosis, 18 myositis, 10 Behcet syndrome, 5 primary antiphospholipid syndrome and 2 had Familial Mediterranean Fever. The vast majority of patients and controls were fully vaccinated (82%) and 397 patients received antiviral treatment, 94% of them were fully vaccinated.ResultsCovid 19 disease in vaccinated patients with rheumatic diseases was shown to perform the same or about the same as those in the control group after adjustment for risk factors for severe disease. 19 of our patients required admission in the intensive care unit (62% full vaccinated) while a total of 12 died (66% non vaccinated). Major risk factors for severe disease were previous respiratory failure, chronic renal impairment, obesity, and failure to receive antiviral therapy. It was also shown that infection with Covid led to an exacerbation or induction of autoimmune disorders in 25 of the participants.ConclusionIn this large cohort, Covid 19 disease was shown to affect patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases the same or approximately the same way as the general population if they are fully vaccinated and if they start timely antiviral treatment where indicated. Introduction and Aim: India experienced the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 during April to June 2021. Massive surge of cases resulting in shortage of beds and oxygen, home care was recommended as a strategy for management of asymptomatic/mild COVID-19 cases. The present study was undertaken to perform home visits and monitor COVID 19 patients who are a part of home-based care programme (HBCP) in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, identification and immediate referral of patients with red flag signs/ symptoms and to identify barriers/challenges faced by health care staff in implementing the programme. Methodology: The present study was a cross-sectional study with universal sampling. It was carried out as part of a district programme for management of home isolation COVID-19 patients. The team visited the houses of COVID-19 patients and evaluated them. Result(s): A total of 112 COVID-19 patients were in home isolation during the study period in Puttur Taluk. Hypertension (29.5%) was the most common co-morbidity and nearly two-fifths (41.1%) of the study participants had one or more comorbidities. Almost two-third (63%) of the patients with comorbidities were symptomatic compared to only 29.4% of patients without any comorbidities. Of the six patients who had saturation of less than 95% five were more than 60 years of age, only one had received vaccination against COVID-19 and all had comorbidities. The HBCP had to face several challenges as the team members could not be in full PPE because of long distances between the houses and hard to reach areas. Conclusion(s): Overall, it is a helpful initiative for patients as the health services were provided at the doorstep during the time of restriction of movement. ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to conduct a survey of the fungal species associated with COVID-19 viral infection in 150 patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital in Al-Diwaniyah City, Iraq, for a five-month period from October 2021 to February 2022. The results indicated the dominance of Candida spp. over the rest of the isolated fungal species, with 97 isolates (64.66%). Aspergillus spp., with 15 isolates (10%), came in second. Rhizopus sp. with 2 isolates (1.33%). Then with 1 isolate (0.66%) for each of Penicillium sp., Coccidiodes sp., and Rhodotorula sp., Also, results show that the male has a higher percentage than the female (54.9%) and co-infections with fungi were more common in the 60-69 age group then in the 70-79 age group (34% versus 24%, respectively). Taking a deeper look at the patients' medical histories, it was shown that fungal co-infection was more prevalent in those with chronic sickness than in those without chronic disease (55.66% versus 43.14%, respectively).Copyright © RJPT All right reserved.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundAlthough renal involvement is an rare extra-articular involvement in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), medications and accopamyning comorbidities may adversly affect renal functions [1].ObjectivesTo determine the frequency and impact of CKD in patients with AS using biologic disease modyfying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs).MethodsBetween 2005 and November 2021, 3207 patients diagnosed with AS according to the modified New York criteria were enrolled in the Hacettepe University biological database (HUR-BIO). The 2012 Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guideline was used for the definition of CKD to evaluate the renal function of patients. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated with the MDRD (modified Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) formula, taking into account the creatinine value, age and gender parameters of the patients [2]. CKD was detected in 39 (1,2%) patients. Age-sex matched 41 non-CKD AS patients were selected as the control group. Demographic and clinical characteristics and mortality rates of AS patients with and without CKD were compared.ResultsOf 39 AS-CKD patients, 25 (64.1%) had CKD before the initation of bDMARD and and 14 (35.8%) developed CKD during follow-up after treatment was started. Patients with AS-CKD had longer duration of symptoms and disease (Table 1). Comorbidities such as hypertension, coronary artery disease and amyloidosis were more prevalent in patients with AS-CKD. At a median follow-up of 2.48(0.1-20.1) years, mortality was observed in 11(28.2%) patients in the AS-CKD group, while no mortality was observed in the age-sex matched AS-nonCKD group (p<0.001, Figure 1). ABSTRACT

Introduction: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, many chronic patients and elective surgical procedures have been postponed to create spaces for the hospitalization of COVID-19 patients, raising issues related to this change. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the demand for blood products transfusion. Materials ant methods: The study presents the results of a retrospective study of blood transfusions in COVID-19 patients admitted to the Constanta County Emergency Clinical Hospital. The period of study was January-December 2021. We compared the transfusion requirement for each type of blood component in COVID 19 patients versus patients with non-COVID pathology. Results and discussions: During 2021, we transfused 282 COVID-19 patients;150 patients had only Covid pneumonia (of which 19 patients with severe forms needed intensive care in ICU-Covid), and 132 patients had various co-morbidities. The maximum blood requests was registered in the period February - April 2021, with a peak of 63 patients in April 2021. The main co-morbidities in patients with Covid 19 were: severe anemia in patients with malignant hemopathies. Anemia at admission in patients with Covid pneumonia is reported in more than 40% of patients. Moderate anemia (Hb <11 g/dL) is considered as an independent risk factor for the severe course of COVID-19 infection and mortality in these patients. The transfusion requirement in these patients was greater than 1.43 RBC (units/patient), 0.81 Plasma units/patient, 0.40 Platelets concentrate units + single donor platelet concentrate units/patient, in accordance with the associated pathology. Conclusion(s): The most requested product was packed red blood cells, the correction of anaemia being an important factor in preventing the severe course of the disease. The platelet requirement was 0.15 units/patient, thrombocytopenia being present in patients with severe evolution of the infection (hospitalized in ICU-COVID). The most requested blood groups were O+ and A+. ABSTRACT

Hospital at Home (HaH) is a sustainable, innovative, and next-generation model of healthcare. From the healthcare management point of view, this model provides cost benefits and quality improvement, and from the physicians' point of view, it helps in providing patient-centered medical care and keeps patients away from hospital admission and its complications. The HaH model was first introduced at John Hopkins in the United States in 1995, which showed very promising results in context to the length of stay, readmission rates, patient satisfaction, and hospital-acquired infections. The HaH model of care provides acute critical care to patients at home and reduces unnecessary hospitalization and related complications. The identified patients for this model of care are elderly patients with chronic conditions and multiple comorbidities. The emergence of technology in today's world and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have increased the demand for the HaH model of care. Although there are many benefits and advantages, the HaH model of care has significant barriers and limitations, such as reimbursement for payment, physician and patient resistance, patient safety, and lack of quantifying research data to support the use of this model. Specific training for the physician, nursing, and other members of the HaH multidisciplinary team is necessary for HaH treatment protocols, along with patient and family caregiver education for those who elect the HaH model of care. HaH is the future of comprehensive healthcare services and helps in achieving the triple aim of access to healthcare, improved quality of care, and reduced cost for healthcare.

ABSTRACT

The main pathogens of severe respiratory infection in children are respiratory viruses, and the current molecular technology allows for a rapid and simultaneous detection of a wide spectrum of these viral pathogens, facilitating the diagnosis and evaluation of viral coinfection. METHODS: This study was conducted between March 2020 and December 2021. All children admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of SARI and who were tested by polymerase chain reaction on nasopharyngeal swabs for SARS-CoV-2 and other common respiratory viral pathogens were included in the study. RESULTS: The result of the viral panel identified 446 children, with one infected with a single virus and 160 co-infected with two or more viruses. This study employed descriptive analyses, where a total of twenty-two coinfections among SARI-causing viruses were identified. Thus, the five most frequent coinfections that were selected for the study are: hRV/SARS-CoV-2 (17.91%), hRV/RSV (14.18%), RSV/SARS-CoV-2 (12.69%), hRV/BoV (10.45%), and hRV/AdV (8.21%). The most significant age group was 38.1%, representing patients aged between 24 and 59 months (61 individuals). Patients older than 59 months represented a total of 27.5%, comprising forty-four patients. The use of oxygen therapy was statistically significant in coinfections with Bocavirus, other CoVs, Metapneumovirus, and RSV. Coinfections with SARS-CoV-2 and the other different coinfections presented a similar time of use of oxygen therapy with a value of (p > 0.05). In the year 2020, hRV/BoV was more frequent in relation to other types of coinfections, representing a total of 35.1%. The year 2021 presented a divergent profile, with hRV/SARS-CoV-2 coinfection being the most frequent (30.8%), followed by hRV/RSV (28.2%). Additionally, 25.6% and 15.4% represented coinfections between RSV/SARS-CoV-2 and hRV/AdV, respectively. We saw that two of the patients coinfected with hRV/SARS-CoV-2 died, representing 9.52% of all deaths in the study. In addition, both hRV/hBoV and hRV/RSV had death records for each case, representing 8.33% and 6.67% of all deaths, respectively. CONCLUSION: Coinfections with respiratory viruses, such as RSV and hBoV, can increase the severity of the disease in children with SARI who are admitted to the ICU, and children infected with SARS-CoV-2 have their clinical condition worsened when they have comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has created many complications in today's world. It has negatively impacted the lives of many people and emphasized the need for a better health system everywhere. COVID-19 is a life-threatening disease, and a high proportion of people have lost their lives due to this pandemic. This situation enables us to dig deeper into mortality records and find meaningful patterns to save many lives in future. Based on the article from the New Indian Express (published on January 19, 2021), a whopping 82% of people who died of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu had comorbidities, while 63 percent of people who died of the disease were above the age of 60, as per data from the Health Department. The data, part of a presentation shown to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, show that of the 12,200 deaths till January 7, as many as 10,118 patients had comorbidities, and 7613 were aged above 60. A total of 3924 people (32%) were aged between 41 and 60. Compared to the 1st wave of COVID-19, the 2nd wave had a high mortality rate. Therefore, it is important to find meaningful insights from the mortality records of COVID-19 patients to know the most vulnerable population and to decide on comprehensive treatment strategies.

COVID-19 vaccines have been widely used to reduce the incidence and disease severity of COVID-19. Questions have lately been raised about the possibility of an association between COVID-19 vaccines and myocarditis, an inflammatory condition affecting the myocardium, or the middle layer of the heart. Myocarditis can be caused by infections, immune reactions, or toxic exposure. The incidence rate of myocarditis and pericarditis was calculated to be 5.98 instances per million COVID-19 vaccine doses delivered, which is less than half of the incidences after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Myocarditis rates in people aged 12 to 39 years are around 12.6 cases per million doses following the second dose of mRNA vaccination. Adolescent men are more likely than women to develop myocarditis after receiving mRNA vaccines. The objectives of this systematic review and meta-analysis are to find out how often myocarditis occurs after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as the risk factors and clinical repercussions of this condition. Nevertheless, the causal relationship between vaccination and myocarditis has been difficult to establish, and further research is required. It is also essential to distinguish between suggested cases of myocarditis and those confirmed by endomyocardial biopsy.

Background: The severity of coronavirus (COVID-19) in patients with chronic comorbidities is much higher than in other patients, which can lead to their death. Machine learning (ML) algorithms as a potential solution for rapid and early clinical evaluation of the severity of the disease can help in allocating and prioritizing resources to reduce mortality. Objective: The objective of this study was to predict the mortality risk and length of stay (LoS) of patients with COVID-19 and history of chronic comorbidities using ML algorithms. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records of COVID-19 patients with a history of chronic comorbidities from March 2020 to January 2021 in Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman, Iran. The outcome of patients, hospitalization was recorded as discharge or death. The filtering technique used to score the features and well-known ML algorithms were applied to predict the risk of mortality and LoS of patients. Ensemble Learning methods is also used. To evaluate the performance of the models, different measures including F1, precision, recall, and accuracy were calculated. The TRIPOD guideline assessed transparent reporting. Results: This study was performed on 1291 patients, including 900 alive and 391 dead patients. Shortness of breath (53.6%), fever (30.1%), and cough (25.3%) were the three most common symptoms in patients. Diabetes mellitus(DM) (31.3%), hypertension (HTN) (27.3%), and ischemic heart disease (IHD) (14.2%) were the three most common chronic comorbidities of patients. Twenty-six important factors were extracted from each patient's record. Gradient boosting model with 84.15% accuracy was the best model for predicting mortality risk and multilayer perceptron (MLP) with rectified linear unit function (MSE = 38.96) was the best model for predicting the LoS. The most common chronic comorbidities among these patients were DM (31.3%), HTN (27.3%), and IHD (14.2%). The most important factors in predicting the risk of mortality were hyperlipidemia, diabetes, asthma, and cancer, and in predicting LoS was shortness of breath. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the use of ML algorithms can be a good tool to predict the risk of mortality and LoS of patients with COVID-19 and chronic comorbidities based on physiological conditions, symptoms, and demographic information of patients. The Gradient boosting and MLP algorithms can quickly identify patients at risk of death or long-term hospitalization and notify physicians to do appropriate interventions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The keystone of safe and effective patient management is to approach a patient with up-to-date medical information. Assessment of patients for their medical conditions has changed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the need for appropriate research infrastructure has increased. Considering an updated list of high-risk underlying conditions in the post-COVID-19 era, this study aimed to evaluate the utilization of dental services by patients with comorbidities during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. METHODS:  Data of patients with comorbidities seeking dental care at a dental school during the COVID-19 pandemic were retrospectively evaluated. Demographic variables (age, gender) and medical history of the participants were recorded. The patients were classified according to their diagnosis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis. The significance level was determined at α=0.05. RESULTS:  The study included data from 1067 patient visits between September 1, 2020 and November 1, 2021. Among these patients, 406 (38.1%) were males and 661 (61.9%) were females, with a mean age of 38.28 ± 14.36 years. Comorbidities were identified in 38.3% of the patients with predominance in females (74.1% n=303). Single comorbidity was observed in 28.1% while multi-morbidity was detected in 10.2% of the cohort. The most prevalent comorbidity was hypertension (9.7%), followed by diabetes (6.5%), thyroid disorders (5%), various psychological diseases (4.5%), COVID-19 infection (4.5%), and different allergies (4%). The presence of one or more co-morbidities was observed mostly in the 50-59 years age group. CONCLUSIONS:  The seeking of dental care among the adult population with comorbidities was high during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. It would be beneficial to develop a template for obtaining a medical history from patients by taking full account of the consequences of the pandemic. The dental profession needs to respond accordingly.

ABSTRACT

Purpose Multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 from Alpha to Omicron have an estimated 6.1 million deaths globally till date. These variants have been found to vary in transmissibility and severity. The present study deals with comparison of morbidity and mortality with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron (B.1.1.529) and Delta (B.1.617.2) variants. Materials and method An observational retrospective cohort study was conducted on a cohort of laboratory confirmed patients of SARS-CoV-2 diagnosed by qRT-PCR of nasopharyngeal swabs in periods;April-2021 and January-2022;that were sequenced and variants were recorded. Patients were invited for a telephonic interview after voluntary and informed consent was obtained from each participant wherein, the demographics, co-morbidities, oxygen requirement and mortality outcomes of the patients were enquired about. Results A total of 200 patients, with 100 from each period were included in the study. Major comorbidities in patients included hypertension, diabetes mellitus and pulmonary disease. Patients who succumbed to the Delta variant (26%) were higher as compared to the Omicron variant (10%);with the elderly (68 ​± ​9.7 ​years) having significant mortality during the Omicron variant. The mortality was increased in patients with comorbidities as with hypertension (53.8%, 70%), diabetes mellitus (26.9%, 40%), chronic pulmonary disease (30.8%, 20%), and smoking (15.4%, 40%) in the patients infected with both Delta and Omicron variants, respectively. Conclusion The study concluded that the newer strains of SARS-CoV-2 have potential of high transmissibility and milder disease for the population by large, however, for patients with comorbidities have a higher proportion of adverse outcomes, irrespective of the variant.

ABSTRACT

Background: Vaccine is an essential tool to limit the health of the COVID-19 pandemic. AstraZeneca vaccine already provided promising effectiveness data. Still, the study must check the correlation between vaccination and antibody titer. Aim: This study aims to evaluate antibody titer after AstraZeneca vaccination based on the age group. Materials and Methods: This study used a prospective cross-sectional method with convenience sampling. Inclusion criteria were all Indonesian citizens above 18 years old who were vaccinated at UTA'45 Jakarta Vaccine Center with no history of COVID-19 before the vaccination and had filled up the informed consent. Results: This study's total sample was 102 females;51.90%, residents of Java Island;91.17% had comorbidities;50,98%, smokers;9,80%, alcohol drinker;9,80%, exercise;80,39%, blood pressure;128/73, SpO2: 97,82. Most participants aged around 30 years had a body mass index of 23.33. Age, comorbidity, smoking, alcohol, and exercise habit significantly correlate with the increase of the participants' antibodies (P < 0.001). The age shows that the younger the participant, the higher the titer antibody 2 will be (P = 0.001, 95% confidence interval [CI],-1.935,-0.694). The exercise shows that the participant with the routine practice will have a higher titer antibody 2 (P = 0.002, 95% CI, 12.016, 51.791). Antibody titer for participants younger than 35 years old increased 5.7 times while for participants between 35 and 45 years old was 3.9 times. Another group (>45-55 years old) has shown an improvement in antibody titer at 1.7 times, but the last group (>55 years old) described an increase in antibody titer at 232.3 times. Conclusions: Age, comorbidity, smoking, alcohol, and exercise contributed to the increase in titer antibody 2 value of the AstraZeneca vaccine participants. Participants in the age group <35 years have an excellent immune system.

ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19 epidemic causes destructive consequences on human beings and on the global economy. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 antibodies response in COVID-19 patients and health-care providers to them in different categories and with respect to age, sex, and symptoms. Materials and Methods: Analysis of immunoglobulin (Ig) G and total COVID antibodies was done by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) and IgM antibodies by rapid card test method in 300 cases. Results: Out of 300 cases, asymptomatic were 29%, mild 26.66%, moderate 17.66%, and severe were 28.33%;percentage of males were higher than females in all. The most common age group involved was 30-40 years (20%). The most common symptom was fever (51.33%), followed by cough (38.66%), and the most common comorbidity was hypertension (16.33%). We observed that severe category had a higher percentage of symptoms as well as comorbidities. Out of 300 cases, 56.66% were IgG positive, and 89.6% were total COVID antibody positive. In rapid IgM antibodies, out of 50 cases, 13 were positive. We observed that IgM was positive mainly in severe cases compared to mild cases, while IgG level was lower in severe cases than those of mild cases. In our study, majority of cases (97 cases) are IgG positive approximately in 8-14 days after onset of symptoms. Conclusion: Quantitative analysis of antibodies is a simple, quick, and cheap method and could play major role in diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19, and also used to pick up silent carriers (asymptomatic patients) who missed in false-negative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in such epidemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes confers an excess risk of death to COVID-19 patients. Causes of death are now available for different phases of the pandemic, encompassing different viral variants and COVID-19 vaccination. The aims of the present study were to update multiple causes of death data on diabetes-related mortality during the pandemic and to estimate the impact of common diabetic comorbidities on excess mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: Diabetes-related deaths in 2020-2021 were compared with the 2018-2019 average; furthermore, age-standardized rates observed during the pandemic were compared with expected figures obtained from the 2008-2019 time series through generalized estimating equation models. Changes in diabetes mortality associated with specific comorbidities were also computed. Excess diabetes-related mortality was +26% in 2020 and +18% in 2021, after the initiation of the vaccination campaign. The presence of diabetes and hypertensive diseases was associated with the highest mortality increase, especially in subjects aged 40-79 years, +41% in 2020 and +30% in 2021. CONCLUSION: The increase in diabetes-related deaths exceeded that observed for all-cause mortality, and the risk was higher when diabetes was associated with hypertensive diseases. Notably, the excess mortality decreased in 2021, after the implementation of vaccination against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the willingness-to-pay (WTP) value of cloth and disposable masks during the pandemic. Each type of mask has its advantages, and each individual has different considerations when choosing the mask they will buy and use. Primary data were obtained from survey questionnaires, with the qualified participants being income earners. Using a snowball sampling technique, a total of 1144 people were selected as participants from 14 Indonesian provinces. Data collection was carried out and questionnaires were distributed through Google Forms and a WhatsApp group, respectively, for 7 days. The results showed that the WTP value of cloth and disposable masks was significantly influenced by similar variables, including age, education, income level, number of household members, activities outside the home, and the presence of comorbidities. All the variables had similar effects on the WTP value of cloth and disposable masks. The absence of differences in the WTP value implies that the most important consideration in reducing the risk of exposure to Covid-19 was not the type of mask but the discipline of wearing a mask when performing activities outside the home. © 2023 AESS Publications.
